It was Demi Moore who started it with the famous Vanity Fair baby bump cover by photographer Annie Leibovitz. Since then thousands of women have celebrated their pregnancy with tasteful maternity photographs. Not all wish to go quite so far as Demi Moore of course but it remains a wonderful way of remembering that special period in a woman’s life and of sharing it with others. With Victoria Beckham now pregnant rumours are rife that she will also do a pregnancy photo session when the time is right.
Even if you do not wish to go as far as Demi Moore with your pregnancy photographs it is still possible to get some wonderfully evocative images of this special time that will give years of pleasure in the future. To give you some ideas below are some photographs from a recent maternity and baby bump photography shoot by photographer Baron Bratby, with thanks to the clients who have allowed us to use these images.
Making the most of your Baby bump experience session
The best time to book your pregnancy portrait session is around four weeks before term. This will help ensure you get the largest ‘baby bump’ without too much risk of nature beating you to it!
Clothing is best kept quite simple, we find a white shirt or blouse and simple white top work really well for the light and airy images. If you have white maternity slacks fine but that is less of an issue. For the black backgrounds a simple black top that can be pulled up allow the focus to be on the bump. If you do not have the above something plain rather than with patterns. Avoid ‘logo’ tops as they date and do not work well in profile.
Doing the ‘Demi Moore’ look
We appreciate you are not a model but we are really rather good at putting people at ease. If you think you may like to try something along these lines just let us know. Our photographer, who has many years experience photographing women, will talk over what you feel comfortable doing. We also arrange a female assistant for maternity shoots to ensure your modesty and help with posing.
