Mumsnet the Mothers and Baby forum have been in the news again. This time railing against the behaviour of certain reps and aggressive baby photographers on the maternity wards.
Clearly young Mums should not be harassed at such a vulnerable moment. There is a danger, however, of losing sight of the positive benefits baby photographers provide and realising too late the priceless value of those early baby photos. Leave it too late and if you do not have a session organised you may miss the chance to capture some very special moments.

How many mums realise that, to get those cute newborn baby photos you so often see, the photography needs to take place within 11 days! After that your bundle of joy will no longer curl up in a tiny ball or allow themselves to be positioned in the way a newborn baby will.

Make sure those memories are secure
Magical though the arrival of a new baby is it invariably bring huge changes and upheaval. Cosy routines are shattered as life struggles to fit around your newborns needs. Sleep gets disrupted and the days never seem to have enough hours. There are of course many many wonderful moments that make up for all this a thousand times over. In the bustle of this new life though, it is all too easy to forget the incidental things, like taking time to capture those priceless first months for the future. Or find the only images you do have are hasty snaps that never quite evoke the full specialness of that period.
Babies grow so fast!
From birth to first birthday a baby seems to change almost by the day. Within weeks the tiny newborn is gone to be replaced by a squirming bundle alert to everything around them and already trying out that first smile. within a few swift months they have changed yet again and already it is hard to imagine they tiny bundle that arrived into the world. Only much later do mothers realise that in all the joy and exasperation of those months no one quite got around to getting that memorable photo that will be treasured for a lifetime. A photo that can never be recreated.
Secure those memories
There is no need to lose those memories however. A professional baby photographer knows just how and when to capture those critical moments. Nor are you tied to the one that turns up unannounced at your bedside. Those memories are every bit as important as redecorating the babies bedroom and buying the new cot. All it takes is a few phone calls and perhaps a visit to the studio in the months up to your babies arrival.
A little planning in advance means you can then relax, knowing the photographer will organise the rest for you. Reminding you of appointments and giving you the chance to step aside from the new routine for a welcome pause and some great photos.
And of course if someone does bound up to your bedside at an inconvenient time you can smile sweetly and tell them you already have the photos organised.
